June 2017 - Parklangley Spring Open

In the under 8’s boys draw, Michael Sampson came through a very tough group with 2 well fought wins 10-8 and 10-9. This only made him grow in confidence going into the knockout phase with a 10-1 win in the first round. His semi final was a lot closer, but a determined performance saw Michael win 10-7 and move into the final, where it was his toughest match yet, but prevailed as the champion with a 10-8 win. Congratulations Michael on a fantastic performance!

In the girls under 8’s, Ashleigh Hannah came 3rd in her group splitting her 4 matches with 2 wins and 2 losses, leading to a very deflated look as she thought only 2 players from each group progressed. However, there was a change to the format, meaning 3 girls went through from each group and there was a very quick change back to the energetic Ashleigh we all know! She eventually came runner up losing a close final 10-8, but beating a girl in the semi final who she had lost to in the groups.

The 12’s boys draw saw Ulrich Nienaber and Kai Van-Roon Collins have 2 tough losses to start with, but Ulrich managed to put that behind him by winning the consolation, beating Kai on the way.

In the girls side of the 12’s, Afalina Vinogradova produced 2 comebacks in the quarters and semis, going a set down in both, but battling back to win 10-5 and 10-1 in the respective 3rd sets, putting her into her first grade 3 final. Unfortunately, she couldn’t produce another comeback as she lost 6-3, 6-3, nevertheless, it was still a great accomplishment getting to her first of many finals.

14 and under boys was littered with Appeti players, with Ulrich, John-Mark Montague, Kai, Toby Froud and Sebastian Mcdonnell-Palomares all coming up against tough opponents and closely getting edged out.

Ciaran Brewer made his mark on the draw by winning his first 3 matches and making the semi finals, dropping only 2 games! His semi final, he managed to recompose himself after taking the first set, but losing the second, coming back strong to win 10-6. The final saw him lose the opening set filled with nerves, but came back out and found his form again taking the second 6-1. In the tiebreak, Ciaran gave coaches Eb and Tim, along with his parents a very nervy 10 minutes as he found himself trailing the entire tie break until at 6-8 down he strung 4 points in a row to win 10-8. An amazing fighting performance from Ciaran!

The under 14’s girls saw Marta Poriete and Afalina managing to get through their first round matches, but subsequently losing the second matches. Amelia Monteith had a tough loss in her first round.

In the 16 and under boys Ciaran had another good performance as he made the semi finals, but losing to the number 4 seed 10-6 in the 3rd set. Seb and Toby had the unlucky draw of playing each other in the first round and it was Toby that came through the battle 6-3 7-6. John-Mark unfortunately had a tough opponent and couldn’t find the win.

Finally, in the Men’s doubles, Seb Kay made his competitive return as an Appeti player, playing alongside James Delaney. They made it to the final with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the semis. In the final, they took the first set, but lost the second. The championship tie break went with serve until 7-7 when Seb and James got the mini break, leaving it up to Seb to serve out with 2 serves, which he did with an ace and an un-returnable winning 10-7.
