April 2017 - The Weald Open

The April sun showed it's face as we headed down to Brighton to compete at The Weald Open! And with lots of players attending and two birthdays during the week it promised to be both a tennis and cake filled week.

The week started with the 12U and 16U Draws. In the Boys 12U Kai and Ulrich made it through to the Quarter Finals only losing to the Number 1 and Number 3 seeds.

Afalina put up a great performance in the Girls 12U getting through to the Semi Finals after making a brilliant comeback in her Quarter Final match to win 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. Although her tennis remained at a high level Afalina couldn’t beat the Number 2 seed in the Semi Final but had certainly left her mark on the 12U Girls Draw.

In the 16U Boys Consolation Seb had a great run making it to the Final. Marta and Amelia met in the 16U Consolation Draw and Amelia showed us that all her hard work back at the centre had paid off by putting up a great performance, beating Marta 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7).

The week ran on a three day tournament format so the 14U and 18U Draws started on Thursday. The Boys Draw proved to be busy and exciting, with Toby, John-Mark, Ciaran, Kai, Ulrich, Joseph, Ollie and Seb competing. Ciaran put in a masterclass, making it to the Quarter Finals, only losing 3 games on his way. The Quarter Final proved more of a battle against the Number 3 seed and Ciaran took it to 3 sets, winning an epic match 6-4, 6-7(3), 1-0 (7). However, Ciaran couldn't convert another 3 setter in the Semi Final and lost 6-1, 6-7 (6), 0-1 (10). But in the 3/4 play off Ciaran put in another great performance winning 6-0, 6-0.

Toby battled through the Boys Consolation, meeting John-Mark in the Semi Final where he won a close match 4-1, 5-4 (4). In the Final Toby kept focussed and won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4).

In the Girls 14U Consolation Draw both Marta and Amelia made it to the Semi Finals. Again Amelia played great tennis in her match taking her opponent to an incredibly close 3 sets, only losing  4-5 (4), 4-2, 0-1 (12).

Ollie made it through to the Quarter Finals of the 18U Draw eventually losing to the Number 4 seed, 4-6, 7-76 (5), 0-1 (7).

The doubles pairings had some great matches with Kai and Ulrich reaching the Boys 12U Semi Finals and Ciaran and Seb winning the 16U Boys Consolation.

There were big results in the Girls 8U Draw with Ashleigh winning the whole draw and Chloe coming runner up. This was a brilliant result for both girls with Ashleigh winning all her matches and Chloe only losing to Ashleigh.
