July 2017 - The Woking Open Tournament

This week saw Team Appeti move location to Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Surrey for the 90th edition of the Woking Open Tournament. Although the week was hit with bad weather and numerous delays, this didn’t dampen the spirits of our players.

Playing on 6 artificial clay courts and 8 tarmac hard courts, meant at least some matches were able to be played during the wet weather and the use of a short set format for some of the matches meant matches didn’t fall too behind schedule.

Kicking things off this week again, were the 9U boys, with Ruben, Stuart and Chas all competing. Ruben was able to win 4 of his 5 matches and made it out of the group stage and into the quarter finals, a great performance from him!

Later that same day in the 8U Mixed Singles, Ashleigh battled through her matches coming away with 4 wins from 6 matches, with a great smile all the way through her tournament.

In the 12U Boys, Kai was able to make the quarter finals after a tough match in the round of 16. Despite being a set and a break down, Kai showed fantastic mental strength to comeback and force a 3rd set tiebreak where he faced match points, but was able to win 11-9!

Afalina blasted her way through to the final of the 12U Girls with some dominant displays. She was able to beat the Number 2 seed in the semi final in straight sets by simply over powering her opponent. Unfortunately, Afalina couldn’t quite produce the same tennis in the final and just fell short, but another good week for her!

In the Men’s Singles, big Seb managed to make the quarter finals, where he lost to the Number 1 seed and eventual winner in a tight contest over short sets. Seb also lost to Number 1 seeds and eventual winners in the Mens Doubles, alongside Tim who was making his competitive return in almost a year (only showing a few signs of rust)!

Big Seb teamed up with Marta to play in the Open Mixed Doubles and they played a great match to take the win with Marta claiming her first open age group title at just 13 years old.

They received their prizes from former Wimbledon Referee Alan Mills CBE.

The 14’s Boys Doubles saw us agonisingly close to an all Appeti final with Kai and John-Mark and Seb and Ulrich making the semi finals and finishing their respective matches within 2 minutes of each other, both with 10-8 defeats in the 3rd sets after recovering from a set down in both matches. Edge of the seat tennis!!

In the 14’s Girls Doubles, Amelia and Marta were crowned champions losing just 9 games on the way. After losing out in the final last week at Dukes Meadow, the girls were determined to amend that performance taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the final.

Finally, in the 16’s Boys Doubles, Ollie and Toby were runners up after taking out the Number 1 seeds in the semi finals 6-2 6-2. They weren’t able to produce the same tennis sadly and even though they fought back from a set and 4-1 down in the final eventually succumbed 6-2 7-5.

And a lovely surprise visit on Finals Day from former Appeti player Leigh Sargeant who couldn’t resist hitting a few balls with Eb on the clay!

A tricky week in the wet for team Appeti, with close matches across all age ranges, but nonetheless, the attitude of players, coaches and parents was perfect as always!
